ED 800- Concepts of Educational Inquiry

Fall 2008

Steven Weiland

This is the introductory course with the Master of Arts in Education program.  This course is designed to challenge thinking, beliefs and philosophies and ideas about education.  Concepts of Educational Inquiry looked into different influences in education, from culture to learning methods, as well as people who influences ideas in education such as Howard Gardner.

In the assignment attached I related Howard Gardner's Multiple Intelligences to different students presented in the movie Spellbound.  I point out Howard Gardner's 8 Multiple Intelligences and provide justification and reasoning behind my decisions.

CEP 805- Learning Math with Technology

Fall 2008

Ralph Putnam

This course looks at the technologies that support mathematics teaching and learning as well as the social and cognitive processes of learning.  Through this class, I looked at the different affordances that technology provides such as automate, simplify and transform tasks to make learning more engaging, help represent knowledge and thinking in a variety of ways, and encourage collaboration and communication between students and teachers.

This resource library showcases different mathematical activities.  Each activity is evaluated to determine what mathematics is being learned, how the learning takes place, what role technologies place in the activity, how it fits with the existing school curriculum and how the technology fits or interacts with the social context of learning.  Each activity follows the NCTM Standards for Pre-K-2.

CEP 816- Teaching and Learning Across the Curriculum

Spring 2009

Rand Spiro

This course helped me to learn current understandings of technology and how it can be used for learning across the academic subjects taught in elementary school: mathematics, science, language arts, social studies, and the arts.  By the end of the course I learned and understood the overall affordances of technology for meaningful learning in K-12 settings, how the affordances of technology intersect with current theories of learning and some of the issues entailed in teaching with technology.

This Instructional Dream assignment took a unit of study that I already teach in school and incorporate the use of technology into it.  The assignment asked me to think about a personal instructional dream as well as technological instructional dream.

TE 891- Children's Literature and Film

Summer 2009

Laura Apol

Through this course I learned how to "read" a film as an independent interpretation of a text.  I learned how to incorporate a variety of children's literature into the curriculum in creative and professional ways.  I explored the different ways children's literature and film work together to bring out strong responses and rich experiences from students.

The following examples of work reflect my ability to analyze and summarize the main differences between the book and the movie of The Wizard of Oz and The Polar Express.    The final paper reflects the course as a whole and teaching as a form of interpretation.

TE 847- Advanced Methods for Teaching Language Arts

Summer 2009

Rebecca Shankland

This course looked at different ways to connect reading, writing, listening, visual language and classroom talk within Language Arts.  I learned different ways to incorporate writing in support of reading such as book club blogs and reflective essays as well as methods to use reading in support of writing through inquiry projects and memoirs.

The examples of work include an integrated unit and poster that I created a book club blog for the book The Namesake and my memoir.

TE 836- Awards and Classics of Children's Literature

Fall 2009

Laura Apol

This course looked at the difference between classics and award books and what they represent.  Through discussion, readings and activities I learned what aspects helped a book become a "classic" or win an award.  I also discussed the intention and purpose of different books, whether they were meant to entertain, instruct, provoke a response or contain a combination of characteristics.  I also learned how personal and cultural beliefs have a relationship with how books are viewed by an individual.

The following examples of work showcase what I learned throughout the course.  The first paper includes my discussion of what universal theme I found in Little Women and how it was represented throughout the book.  The second piece is a list of children's books that I consider 'classics' and my reasoning behind it.  In the final paper I was asked to summarize my thoughts and learning’s from the course by answering a quote by Louise Bernikow "What is commonly called Literary history is actually a record of choices".

CEP 800- Learning in School and Other Settings

Fall 2009

Cary Roseth

In this class I learned and developed a deeper appreciation of the learning that goes on in school and other settings.  I was able to connect the different theories of learning taught in class to my other experiences as a learner such as in school and at work.  Through discussions and activities in the class, I constantly examined the relationship and implications between the ideas of learning and the learning situations the students' encounter outside of school.

One of the major assignments of the course was to create our own blog and upload assignments using specific technologies.  Through this course and showcased on my blog, I learned how to use Audacity and Windows Movie Maker.

CEP 813- Electronic Portfolios

Spring 2010

Patrick Dickson, Denise Leach

Through this course I explored different forms of technology in order to create my own website.  I created an electronic portfolio that showcased my classroom and my students' authentic work.  I learned how to upload different aspects of a portfolio such as my resume, pictures, hyperlinks and interactive media such as a Google map.

The following example of work was the culmination project of the class in which I created my own online portfolio.

CEP 882- Technology and Literacy for Students with Mild Disabilities

Summer 2010

Cynthia Okolo

This course looks at the affordances of technology to meet the needs of students who face challenges reading and comprehending text.  Students considered for this course included students with learning difficulties and students with mild disabilities.  Through this course, I examined different technology applications and ways to use them in the classroom to support students' literacy acquisition and improve their performance and autonomy with reading and writing.

In the following example I learned how to use voice thread, a program that allows the ability to upload pictures, write text and record your voice.

Ed 870- Capstone Seminar

Summer 2010

Matthew Koehler, Penny Thompson

Through this course I developed an electronic portfolio.  I reflected on my two years of courses as well as my initial personal and professional goals upon entering Micigan State University in 2008.  This course has helped me to reflect on my past and think about my future as a learner and educator.
